There are three weeks to go (at the time of writing) till the first phase of the Vodafone App Star Competition is over, so there's still time to submit a widget. I asked Vodafone's Sanj Matharu to give us a quick heads-up about the JIL Developer Portal:
What is JIL and why is it important?
JIL is a Joint Venture between Vodafone, Softbank and China Mobile and Verizon Wireless. It gives developers around the world an opportunity to create apps (or widgets as we call them) and distribute them from a single portal, setting price points for each market. This will give developers broad coverage across Europe, Asia, and the US with a combined customer base of almost 1bn customers.
In addition to this, the world's leading telecommunications operators have formed an alliance known as the Wholesale Applications Community of which JIL is a member. This means even more distribution opportunities for developers with a potential combined customer base of 3 billion.
Why should someone be interested in developing on the JIL platform?
Apart from the distribution opportunities, the technology used to create widgets use open standards such as W3C. This means JIL widgets offer a W3C standards based solution for web based application development on mobile. It should also be noted that this is a cross platform opportunity so JIL widgets will work on Symbian devices and the Vodafone 360 H1 and M1 devices. For more info check out http://www.jil.org/vodafone. Once a developer has submitted a widget to be published, it will take 10 working days to go live in the Vodafone Apps Shop.
What is the Vodafone App Star competition? Who is it open to?
The Vodafone AppStar competition gives developers around the world to develop a widget and be in with a chance to win up to €100,000. It's open to everyone and the submissions will be judged on quality, innovation and value. We really think this is a good way to engage with the worldwide developer community and give them a chance to get involved with the technology. For more info check out www.jil.org/vodafone/appstar.
